Dongsin Engineering & Construction's (KOSDAQ:025950) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth
Dongsin Engineering & Construction (KOSDAQ:025950) shareholders have seen the share price descend 26% over the month. But that does not change the realty that the stock's performance has been terrific, over five years. In that time, the share price has soared some 690% higher! So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. It really delights us to see such great share price performance for investors.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.
While Dongsin Engineering & Construction made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.
For the last half decade, Dongsin Engineering & Construction can boast revenue growth at a rate of 21% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. Arguably, this is well and truly reflected in the strong share price gain of 51%(per year) over the same period. It's never too late to start following a top notch stock like Dongsin Engineering & Construction, since some long term winners go on winning for decades. On the face of it, this looks lke a good opportunity, although we note sentiment seems very positive already.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Dongsin Engineering & Construction, it has a TSR of 719% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Dongsin Engineering & Construction shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 103% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 52% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
