Stock Analysis
Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. As with many other companies Sewon Co.,Ltd (KOSDAQ:234100) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is SewonLtd's Net Debt?
As you can see below, at the end of September 2024, SewonLtd had ₩22.8b of debt, up from ₩13.1b a year ago. Click the image for more detail. But it also has ₩91.8b in cash to offset that, meaning it has ₩68.9b net cash.
A Look At SewonLtd's Liabilities
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that SewonLtd had liabilities of ₩61.4b due within 12 months and liabilities of ₩14.1b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had ₩91.8b in cash and ₩43.5b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it actually has ₩59.8b more liquid assets than total liabilities.
This surplus strongly suggests that SewonLtd has a rock-solid balance sheet (and the debt is of no concern whatsoever). Having regard to this fact, we think its balance sheet is as strong as an ox. Succinctly put, SewonLtd boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load!
SewonLtd's EBIT was pretty flat over the last year, but that shouldn't be an issue given the it doesn't have a lot of debt. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is SewonLtd's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So when considering debt, it's definitely worth looking at the earnings trend. Click here for an interactive snapshot.
Finally, a business needs free cash flow to pay off debt; accounting profits just don't cut it. SewonLtd may have net cash on the balance sheet, but it is still interesting to look at how well the business converts its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, because that will influence both its need for, and its capacity to manage debt. In the last three years, SewonLtd's free cash flow amounted to 50% of its EBIT, less than we'd expect. That weak cash conversion makes it more difficult to handle indebtedness.
Summing Up
While it is always sensible to investigate a company's debt, in this case SewonLtd has ₩68.9b in net cash and a strong balance sheet. So is SewonLtd's debt a risk? It doesn't seem so to us. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it.
