Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (TSE:9104) stock performs better than its underlying earnings growth over last five years
For many, the main point of investing in the stock market is to achieve spectacular returns. And highest quality companies can see their share prices grow by huge amounts. Don't believe it? Then look at the Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (TSE:9104) share price. It's 331% higher than it was five years ago. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. Better yet, the share price has risen 3.9% in the last week.
On the back of a solid 7-day performance, let's check what role the company's fundamentals have played in driving long term shareholder returns.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 53% per year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 34% over the same period. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 5.33.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' TSR for the last 5 years was 595%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 23% in the last year, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines shareholders lost 8.5% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 47% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Mitsui O.S.K. Lines better, we need to consider many other factors.
