INES (TSE:9742) Is Increasing Its Dividend To ¥30.00

INES Corporation's (TSE:9742) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥30.00 on 26th of June. This takes the dividend yield to 3.3%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

INES' Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, INES' dividend was only 50% of earnings, however it was paying out 3,671% of free cash flows. This signals that the company is more focused on returning cash flow to shareholders, but it could mean that the dividend is exposed to cuts in the future.

Unless the company can turn things around, EPS could fall by 6.9% over the next year. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 67%, which is definitely feasible to continue.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥16.00 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥60.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 14% per annum over that time. INES has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.

Dividend Growth Is Doubtful

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. In the last five years, INES' earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 6.9% per annum. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think INES' payments are rock solid. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
