More Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For BTM, Inc.'s (TSE:5247) Shares After Tumbling 32%

The BTM, Inc. (TSE:5247) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 32%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 73% share price decline.

Even after such a large drop in price, it's still not a stretch to say that BTM's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 14.5x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in Japan, where the median P/E ratio is around 13x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

Earnings have risen firmly for BTM recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is BTM's Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like BTM's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 25% last year. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 9.8% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.

With this information, we find it interesting that BTM is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

The Bottom Line On BTM's P/E

Following BTM's share price tumble, its P/E is now hanging on to the median market P/E. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of BTM revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
