NEXTAGE's (TSE:3186) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
NEXTAGE Co., Ltd. (TSE:3186) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 26th of February to ¥33.00. This will take the annual payment to 1.8% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

NEXTAGE's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Based on the last payment, NEXTAGE was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 20.3% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 26%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
NEXTAGE Has A Solid Track Record
The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥0.896 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥33.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 43% over that duration. It is good to see that there has been strong dividend growth, and that there haven't been any cuts for a long time.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. It's encouraging to see that NEXTAGE has been growing its earnings per share at 20% a year over the past five years. NEXTAGE definitely has the potential to grow its dividend in the future with earnings on an uptrend and a low payout ratio.
Our Thoughts On NEXTAGE's Dividend
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think NEXTAGE will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think NEXTAGE is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. To that end, NEXTAGE has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit concerning) we think you should know about. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas? Try our collection of strong dividend payers.
