Intellex Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:8940) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 27%
The Intellex Co., Ltd. (TSE:8940) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 27%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 79% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, considering around half the companies operating in Japan's Real Estate industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.8x, you may still consider Intellex as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.2x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Intellex's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
For instance, Intellex's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Intellex's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 3.8%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with revenue growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 6.6% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
With this in consideration, it's easy to understand why Intellex's P/S falls short of the mark set by its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What Does Intellex's P/S Mean For Investors?
Despite Intellex's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
In line with expectations, Intellex maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
