STrust Co.,Ltd. (TSE:3280) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 13th of November to ¥12.00. This will take the annual payment to 4.1% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

STrustLtd's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Before making this announcement, STrustLtd was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

Looking forward, EPS could fall by 0.3% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could be 16%, which we are pretty comfortable with and we think is feasible on an earnings basis.

STrustLtd Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥6.00 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥24.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 15% per annum over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. However, things aren't all that rosy. STrustLtd hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years.

In Summary

Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. With shrinking earnings, the company may see some issues maintaining the dividend even though they look pretty sustainable for now. The dividend looks okay, but there have been some issues in the past, so we would be a little bit cautious.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
