Tohokushinsha Film (TSE:2329) Is Due To Pay A Dividend Of ¥6.67

The board of Tohokushinsha Film Corporation (TSE:2329) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥6.67 per share on the 30th of June. The dividend yield of 4.2% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Estimates Indicate Tohokushinsha Film's Could Struggle to Maintain Dividend Payments In The Future

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Based on the last payment, the company wasn't making enough to cover what it was paying to shareholders. Without profits and cash flows increasing, it would be difficult for the company to continue paying the dividend at this level.

Earnings per share could rise by 14.4% over the next year if things go the same way as they have for the last few years. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 134%, which probably can't continue without starting to put some pressure on the balance sheet.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was ¥4.67, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥26.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 19% per annum over that time. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.

Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. It's encouraging to see that Tohokushinsha Film has been growing its earnings per share at 14% a year over the past five years. Although per-share earnings are growing at a credible rate, the massive payout ratio may limit growth in the company's future dividend payments.

Tohokushinsha Film's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. While we generally think the level of distributions are a bit high, we wouldn't rule it out as becoming a good dividend payer in the future as its earnings are growing healthily. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
