Pulling back 6.9% this week, Matsuya Foods Holdings' TSE:9887) five-year decline in earnings may be coming into investors focus
Matsuya Foods Holdings Co., Ltd. (TSE:9887) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 15% in the last quarter. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. In that time, it is up 50%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 95%.
In light of the stock dropping 6.9% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Matsuya Foods Holdings' earnings per share are down 4.4% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
By glancing at these numbers, we'd posit that the decline in earnings per share is not representative of how the business has changed over the years. Therefore, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movements.
We doubt the modest 0.4% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. On the other hand, Matsuya Foods Holdings' revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 7.4% over the last five years. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Matsuya Foods Holdings' TSR for the last 5 years was 55%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Matsuya Foods Holdings has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 1.3% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 9% a year, is even better. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute.
