Here's Why Arr Planner (TSE:2983) Has A Meaningful Debt Burden

The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. Importantly, Arr Planner Co., Ltd. (TSE:2983) does carry debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

When Is Debt A Problem?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Arr Planner's Net Debt?

As you can see below, at the end of October 2025, Arr Planner had JP¥18.6b of debt, up from JP¥15.2b a year ago. Click the image for more detail. However, because it has a cash reserve of JP¥5.97b, its net debt is less, at about JP¥12.7b.

A Look At Arr Planner's Liabilities

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Arr Planner had liabilities of JP¥22.5b due within 12 months and liabilities of JP¥4.28b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of JP¥5.97b and JP¥181.0m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by JP¥20.7b.

When you consider that this deficiency exceeds the company's JP¥16.5b market capitalization, you might well be inclined to review the balance sheet intently. In the scenario where the company had to clean up its balance sheet quickly, it seems likely shareholders would suffer extensive dilution.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.

Arr Planner's net debt is 3.7 times its EBITDA, which is a significant but still reasonable amount of leverage. However, its interest coverage of 13.9 is very high, suggesting that the interest expense on the debt is currently quite low. It is well worth noting that Arr Planner's EBIT shot up like bamboo after rain, gaining 52% in the last twelve months. That'll make it easier to manage its debt. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Arr Planner will need earnings to service that debt. So when considering debt, it's definitely worth looking at the earnings trend. Click here for an interactive snapshot.

Finally, a business needs free cash flow to pay off debt; accounting profits just don't cut it. So we clearly need to look at whether that EBIT is leading to corresponding free cash flow. Over the last three years, Arr Planner reported free cash flow worth 18% of its EBIT, which is really quite low. For us, cash conversion that low sparks a little paranoia about is ability to extinguish debt.

Our View

We feel some trepidation about Arr Planner's difficulty level of total liabilities, but we've got positives to focus on, too. To wit both its interest cover and EBIT growth rate were encouraging signs. When we consider all the factors discussed, it seems to us that Arr Planner is taking some risks with its use of debt. So while that leverage does boost returns on equity, we wouldn't really want to see it increase from here. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Arr Planner (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.

At the end of the day, it's often better to focus on companies that are free from net debt. You can access our special list of such companies (all with a track record of profit growth). It's free.
