Infomart (TSE:2492) Is Finding It Tricky To Allocate Its Capital
When researching a stock for investment, what can tell us that the company is in decline? More often than not, we'll see a declining return on capital employed (ROCE) and a declining amount of capital employed. This indicates to us that the business is not only shrinking the size of its net assets, but its returns are falling as well. On that note, looking into Infomart (TSE:2492), we weren't too upbeat about how things were going.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Infomart:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = JP¥1.2b ÷ (JP¥15b - JP¥3.7b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
Thus, Infomart has an ROCE of 11%. In isolation, that's a pretty standard return but against the Professional Services industry average of 16%, it's not as good.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Infomart Tell Us?
We are a bit worried about the trend of returns on capital at Infomart. About five years ago, returns on capital were 22%, however they're now substantially lower than that as we saw above. Meanwhile, capital employed in the business has stayed roughly the flat over the period. Since returns are falling and the business has the same amount of assets employed, this can suggest it's a mature business that hasn't had much growth in the last five years. So because these trends aren't typically conducive to creating a multi-bagger, we wouldn't hold our breath on Infomart becoming one if things continue as they have.
On a side note, Infomart's current liabilities have increased over the last five years to 25% of total assets, effectively distorting the ROCE to some degree. Without this increase, it's likely that ROCE would be even lower than 11%. While the ratio isn't currently too high, it's worth keeping an eye on this because if it gets particularly high, the business could then face some new elements of risk.
What We Can Learn From Infomart's ROCE
In summary, it's unfortunate that Infomart is generating lower returns from the same amount of capital. Long term shareholders who've owned the stock over the last five years have experienced a 48% depreciation in their investment, so it appears the market might not like these trends either. Unless there is a shift to a more positive trajectory in these metrics, we would look elsewhere.
