Here's Why I Think UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA (TYO:6061) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA (TYO:6061), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA managed to grow EPS by 8.5% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. It seems UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA is pretty stable, since revenue and EBIT margins are pretty flat year on year. That's not bad, but it doesn't point to ongoing future growth, either.

Since UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA is no giant, with a market capitalization of JP¥8.9b, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 46% of the shares, making insiders a very influential shareholder group. I'm always comforted by solid insider ownership like this, as it implies that those running the business are genuinely motivated to create shareholder value. With that sort of holding, insiders have about JP¥4.1b riding on the stock, at current prices. That's nothing to sneeze at!

Does UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

As I already mentioned, UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA is a growing business, which is what I like to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. The combination sparks joy for me, so I'd consider keeping the company on a watchlist. We should say that we've discovered 1 warning sign for UNIVERSAL ENGEISHA that you should be aware of before investing here.

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
