Daiichi Jitsugyo (TSE:8059) Will Pay A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
Daiichi Jitsugyo Co., Ltd. (TSE:8059) has announced that on 29th of November, it will be paying a dividend of¥36.00, which a reduction from last year's comparable dividend. The dividend yield of 3.9% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Daiichi Jitsugyo's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Daiichi Jitsugyo is quite easily earning enough to cover the dividend, however it is being let down by weak cash flows. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 13.6% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 30% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥25.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥72.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 11% over that duration. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's encouraging to see that Daiichi Jitsugyo has been growing its earnings per share at 14% a year over the past five years. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for Daiichi Jitsugyo's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.
Our Thoughts On Daiichi Jitsugyo's Dividend
Overall, it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, but this might be explained by the payments being a bit high previously. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
