Stock Analysis
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at JTEKT (TSE:6473) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for JTEKT, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.046 = JP¥54b ÷ (JP¥1.7t - JP¥470b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
Thus, JTEKT has an ROCE of 4.6%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Auto Components industry average of 6.2%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For JTEKT Tell Us?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at JTEKT, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 6.8% over the last five years. Meanwhile, the business is utilizing more capital but this hasn't moved the needle much in terms of sales in the past 12 months, so this could reflect longer term investments. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
Our Take On JTEKT's ROCE
In summary, JTEKT is reinvesting funds back into the business for growth but unfortunately it looks like sales haven't increased much just yet. Unsurprisingly then, the total return to shareholders over the last five years has been flat. Therefore based on the analysis done in this article, we don't think JTEKT has the makings of a multi-bagger.
