Even With A 41% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Suncall Corporation's (TSE:5985) Performance Completely

Suncall Corporation (TSE:5985) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 41% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 27% over that time.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Suncall's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Auto Components industry in Japan, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Suncall's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

The revenue growth achieved at Suncall over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Suncall, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

Suncall's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 17% gain to the company's top line. As a result, it also grew revenue by 29% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 3.3%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

With this information, we find it interesting that Suncall is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

What Does Suncall's P/S Mean For Investors?

Suncall's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Suncall currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. It'd be fair to assume that potential risks the company faces could be the contributing factor to the lower than expected P/S. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
