Returns Are Gaining Momentum At SeSa (BIT:SES)

What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at SeSa (BIT:SES) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for SeSa, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.15 = €142m ÷ (€2.0b - €1.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to July 2023).

So, SeSa has an ROCE of 15%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 14% generated by the Electronic industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us

SeSa is displaying some positive trends. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 15%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 141%. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at SeSa thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.

Another thing to note, SeSa has a high ratio of current liabilities to total assets of 53%. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.

Our Take On SeSa's ROCE

All in all, it's terrific to see that SeSa is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. Since the stock has returned a staggering 382% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.

On the other side of ROCE, we have to consider valuation. That's why we have a FREE intrinsic value estimation on our platform that is definitely worth checking out.
