Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. With that in mind, the ROCE of Digital Value (BIT:DGV) looks attractive right now, so lets see what the trend of returns can tell us.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Digital Value is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.28 = €39m ÷ (€364m - €223m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).
So, Digital Value has an ROCE of 28%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 11% earned by companies in a similar industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
In terms of Digital Value's history of ROCE, it's quite impressive. The company has consistently earned 28% for the last two years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 116% in that time. With returns that high, it's great that the business can continually reinvest its money at such appealing rates of return. You'll see this when looking at well operated businesses or favorable business models.
One more thing to note, even though ROCE has remained relatively flat over the last two years, the reduction in current liabilities to 61% of total assets, is good to see from a business owner's perspective. This can eliminate some of the risks inherent in the operations because the business has less outstanding obligations to their suppliers and or short-term creditors than they did previously. We'd like to see this trend continue though because as it stands today, thats still a pretty high level.
In Conclusion...
Digital Value has demonstrated its proficiency by generating high returns on increasing amounts of capital employed, which we're thrilled about. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 170% return they've received over the last year. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
