The total return for BFF Bank (BIT:BFF) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
While BFF Bank S.p.A. (BIT:BFF) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 11% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been pleasing. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 69% in that time.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 4.9%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, BFF Bank achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 21% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 11% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 6.74.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, BFF Bank's TSR for the last 5 years was 157%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
BFF Bank shareholders are up 9.8% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 21% per year for five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand BFF Bank better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that BFF Bank is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
