Every investor on earth makes bad calls sometimes. But really bad investments should be rare. So spare a thought for the long term shareholders of Somec S.p.A. (BIT:SOM); the share price is down a whopping 72% in the last three years. That would be a disturbing experience. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 62% lower in that time. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 32% in the last three months.

With the stock having lost 10% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

Somec wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last three years, Somec saw its revenue grow by 17% per year, compound. That's a pretty good rate of top-line growth. So it's hard to believe the share price decline of 20% per year is due to the revenue. It could be that the losses were much larger than expected. This is exactly why investors need to diversify - even when a loss making company grows revenue, it can fail to deliver for shareholders.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Somec will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

Somec shareholders are down 62% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 21%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 10% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Somec better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 4 warning signs for Somec (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
