Strong week for Banca Sistema (BIT:BST) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of three-year loss
It's nice to see the Banca Sistema S.p.A. (BIT:BST) share price up 13% in a week. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. After all, the share price is down 29% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.
The recent uptick of 13% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Banca Sistema's TSR for the last 3 years was -19%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Banca Sistema has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 26% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 0.3% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Banca Sistema better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
