Ritco Logistics Limited's (NSE:RITCO) Shares Leap 26% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story

Ritco Logistics Limited (NSE:RITCO) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 26% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 41% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Ritco Logistics' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.3x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 32x and even P/E's above 58x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

The recent earnings growth at Ritco Logistics would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this good earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Ritco Logistics' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 6.6% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see EPS up by 1,146% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 24% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Ritco Logistics' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Ritco Logistics' P/E?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Ritco Logistics' P/E close to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Ritco Logistics revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
