Urja Global's (NSE:URJA) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth
The Urja Global Limited (NSE:URJA) share price has had a bad week, falling 11%. But that doesn't undermine the fantastic longer term performance (measured over five years). Indeed, the share price is up a whopping 694% in that time. So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. But the real question is whether the business fundamentals can improve over the long term. Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 11%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.
See our latest analysis for Urja Global
While Urja Global made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.
Over the last half decade Urja Global's revenue has actually been trending down at about 30% per year. This is in stark contrast to the strong share price growth of 51%, compound, per year. There can be no doubt this kind of decoupling of revenue growth and share price growth is unusual to see in loss making companies. I think it's fair to say there is probably a fair bit of excitement in the price.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Urja Global's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Urja Global hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 730% exceeds its share price return of 694%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Urja Global has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 168% in the last twelve months. That's better than the annualised return of 53% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
