The total return for National Aluminium (NSE:NATIONALUM) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
It hasn't been the best quarter for National Aluminium Company Limited (NSE:NATIONALUM) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 27% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been spectacular. Indeed, the share price is up a whopping 417% in that time. So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. The most important thing for savvy investors to consider is whether the underlying business can justify the share price gain.
In light of the stock dropping 3.4% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, National Aluminium achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 74% per year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 39% over the same period. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 7.91.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for National Aluminium the TSR over the last 5 years was 564%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that National Aluminium shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 25% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 46% a year, is even better. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand National Aluminium better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for National Aluminium (of which 1 is concerning!) you should know about.
