Have Insiders Been Selling Astec LifeSciences Limited (NSE:ASTEC) Shares?

We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So before you buy or sell Astec LifeSciences Limited (NSE:ASTEC), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise'.

Astec LifeSciences Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the MD & Director, Ashok Hiremath, for ₹527m worth of shares, at about ₹1,014 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of ₹1,061, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 35% of Ashok Hiremath's holding.

In the last year Astec LifeSciences insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Astec LifeSciences insiders own 13% of the company, worth about ₹2.7b. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The Astec LifeSciences Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Astec LifeSciences shares in the last quarter. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Astec LifeSciences insider transactions don't fill us with confidence.
