Here's Why We Think Ashapura Minechem (NSE:ASHAPURMIN) Is Well Worth Watching

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Ashapura Minechem (NSE:ASHAPURMIN). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Ashapura Minechem's Improving Profits

In business, though not in life, profits are a key measure of success; and share prices tend to reflect earnings per share (EPS). So like a ray of sunshine through a gap in the clouds, improving EPS is considered a good sign. It is therefore awe-striking that Ashapura Minechem's EPS went from ₹2.89 to ₹48.46 in just one year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company. Could this be a sign that the business has reached an inflection point?

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. The good news is that Ashapura Minechem is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 14.3 percentage points to 3.7%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Ashapura Minechem isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₹13b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Ashapura Minechem Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Ashapura Minechem shares worth a considerable sum. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at ₹4.4b, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That holding amounts to 34% of the stock on issue, thus making insiders influential, and aligned, owners of the business.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations between ₹7.3b and ₹29b, like Ashapura Minechem, the median CEO pay is around ₹17m.

The CEO of Ashapura Minechem was paid just ₹796k in total compensation for the year ending . This could be considered a token amount, and indicates that the company does not need to use payment to motivate the CEO - that is often a good sign. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is Ashapura Minechem Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Ashapura Minechem's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. Ashapura Minechem certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it's probably well worth further consideration.
