Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like ICICI Lombard General Insurance (NSE:ICICIGI). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is ICICI Lombard General Insurance Growing?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. It certainly is nice to see that ICICI Lombard General Insurance has managed to grow EPS by 19% per year over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Not all of ICICI Lombard General Insurance's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note ICICI Lombard General Insurance's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 12% to ₹127b. That's a real positive.

Are ICICI Lombard General Insurance Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since ICICI Lombard General Insurance has a market capitalization of ₹704b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares.
