Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By IIFL Securities Limited's (NSE:IIFLSEC) Earnings Despite 36% Price Jump

Despite an already strong run, IIFL Securities Limited (NSE:IIFLSEC) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 36% in the last thirty days. This latest share price bounce rounds out a remarkable 364% gain over the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 34x, you may still consider IIFL Securities as an attractive investment with its 20.4x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, IIFL Securities has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, IIFL Securities would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 119% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 155% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 26% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.

With this information, we find it odd that IIFL Securities is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Despite IIFL Securities' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of IIFL Securities revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
