Here's Why We Think Pricol (NSE:PRICOLLTD) Is Well Worth Watching

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Pricol (NSE:PRICOLLTD), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Pricol Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In a capitalist society capital chases profits, and that means share prices tend rise with earnings per share (EPS). So like the hint of a smile on a face that I love, growing EPS generally makes me look twice. It is therefore awe-striking that Pricol's EPS went from ₹1.45 to ₹4.52 in just one year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. I note that Pricol's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. While we note Pricol's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 9.3% to ₹15b. That's progress.

Pricol isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₹15b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Pricol Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Pricol shares worth a considerable sum. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at ₹4.0b, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That holding amounts to 27% of the stock on issue, thus making insiders influential, and aligned, owners of the business.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Pricol with market caps between ₹7.8b and ₹31b is about ₹15m.

The Pricol CEO received total compensation of just ₹6.0m in the year to . That's clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Does Pricol Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Pricol's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The sharp increase in earnings could signal good business momentum. Big growth can make big winners, so I do think Pricol is worth considering carefully. Of course, identifying quality businesses is only half the battle; investors need to know whether the stock is undervalued.
