We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether O.R.T. Technologies (TLV:ORTC) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is O.R.T. Technologies' Cash Runway?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. In June 2020, O.R.T. Technologies had ₪117m in cash, and was debt-free. In the last year, its cash burn was ₪3.0m. That means it had a cash runway of very many years as of June 2020. While this is only one measure of its cash burn situation, it certainly gives us the impression that holders have nothing to worry about. How Well Is O.R.T. Technologies Growing?

Happily, O.R.T. Technologies is travelling in the right direction when it comes to its cash burn, which is down 61% over the last year. Unfortunately, however, operating revenue dropped 20% during the same time frame. On balance, we'd say the company is improving over time. In reality, this article only makes a short study of the company's growth data. This graph of historic earnings and revenue shows how O.R.T. Technologies is building its business over time.

Can O.R.T. Technologies Raise More Cash Easily?

We are certainly impressed with the progress O.R.T. Technologies has made over the last year, but it is also worth considering how costly it would be if it wanted to raise more cash to fund faster growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Since it has a market capitalisation of ₪120m, O.R.T. Technologies' ₪3.0m in cash burn equates to about 2.5% of its market value. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.

So, Should We Worry About O.R.T. Technologies' Cash Burn?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about O.R.T. Technologies' cash burn. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. While its falling revenue wasn't great, the other factors mentioned in this article more than make up for weakness on that measure. Looking at all the measures in this article, together, we're not worried about its rate of cash burn; the company seems well on top of its medium-term spending needs.
