Returns on Capital Paint A Bright Future For Spring Ventures (TLV:SPRG)
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Spring Ventures' (TLV:SPRG) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Spring Ventures is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.47 = ₪69m ÷ (₪152m - ₪3.4m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
Thus, Spring Ventures has an ROCE of 47%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Online Retail industry average of 11%.

How Are Returns Trending?
We're delighted to see that Spring Ventures is reaping rewards from its investments and is now generating some pre-tax profits. About five years ago the company was generating losses but things have turned around because it's now earning 47% on its capital. In addition to that, Spring Ventures is employing 115% more capital than previously which is expected of a company that's trying to break into profitability. We like this trend, because it tells us the company has profitable reinvestment opportunities available to it, and if it continues going forward that can lead to a multi-bagger performance.
The Key Takeaway
In summary, it's great to see that Spring Ventures has managed to break into profitability and is continuing to reinvest in its business. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
