Guangdong Investment (HKG:270) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
Guangdong Investment Limited's (HKG:270) periodic dividend will be increasing on the 30th of October to HK$0.2397, with investors receiving 28% more than last year's HK$0.187. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 7.0%.

Guangdong Investment's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Prior to this announcement, Guangdong Investment's dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 21% of free cash flows. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 10.2% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 77%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was HK$0.23, compared to the most recent full-year payment of HK$0.31. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 3.0% over that duration. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. In the last five years, Guangdong Investment's earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 9.8% per annum. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Guangdong Investment is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
