Yuexiu Transport Infrastructure (HKG:1052) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Yuexiu Transport Infrastructure Limited (HKG:1052) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of CN¥0.15 on the 29th of November, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 4.5%.

Yuexiu Transport Infrastructure's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. However, prior to this announcement, Yuexiu Transport Infrastructure's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 76.9%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 42% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was CN¥0.163, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CN¥0.174. Dividend payments have grown at less than 1% a year over this period. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Yuexiu Transport Infrastructure's EPS has fallen by approximately 11% per year during the past five years. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. Over the next year, however, earnings are actually predicted to rise, but we would still be cautious until a track record of earnings growth can be built.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Yuexiu Transport Infrastructure's payments are rock solid. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
