Who Has Been Buying PCCW Limited (HKG:8) Shares?
We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So before you buy or sell PCCW Limited (HKG:8), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
What Is Insider Selling?
It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At PCCW
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Chairman Tzar Kai Li for HK$804m worth of shares, at about HK$5.20 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being HK$4.43). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. Tzar Kai Li was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Does PCCW Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. PCCW insiders own about HK$2.1b worth of shares (which is 6.1% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
So What Do The PCCW Insider Transactions Indicate?
The fact that there have been no PCCW insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year.
