We Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Xiaomi (HKG:1810) Passed With Ease
The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Xiaomi (HKG:1810). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.
How Quickly Is Xiaomi Increasing Earnings Per Share?
Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. We can see that in the last three years Xiaomi grew its EPS by 6.7% per year. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. EBIT margins for Xiaomi remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 35% to CN¥366b. That's a real positive.

Are Xiaomi Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Owing to the size of Xiaomi, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth CN¥397b. This totals to 34% of shares in the company. Enough to lead management's decision making process down a path that brings the most benefit to shareholders. So there is opportunity here to invest in a company whose management have tangible incentives to deliver.
Does Xiaomi Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One important encouraging feature of Xiaomi is that it is growing profits. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. These two factors are a huge highlight for the company which should be a strong contender your watchlists. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Xiaomi by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
