Does Mi Ming Mart Holdings (HKG:8473) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Mi Ming Mart Holdings (HKG:8473). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Mi Ming Mart Holdings Growing?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Mi Ming Mart Holdings's EPS has grown 26% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. To cut to the chase Mi Ming Mart Holdings's EBIT margins dropped last year, and so did its revenue. That is, not a hint of euphemism here, suboptimal.

Since Mi Ming Mart Holdings is no giant, with a market capitalization of HK$336m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Mi Ming Mart Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

The first bit of good news is that no Mi Ming Mart Holdings insiders reported share sales in the last twelve months. But the really good news is that Executive Director & Compliance Officer Mi Wahng Yuen spent HK$4.4m buying stock stock, at an average price of around HK$0.15. Big buys like that give me a sense of opportunity; actions speak louder than words.

And the insider buying isn't the only sign of alignment between shareholders and the board, since Mi Ming Mart Holdings insiders own more than a third of the company. In fact, they own 72% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. With that sort of holding, insiders have about HK$243m riding on the stock, at current prices. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Should You Add Mi Ming Mart Holdings To Your Watchlist?
