We Like UNQ Holdings' (HKG:2177) Earnings For More Than Just Statutory Profit
Investors signalled that they were pleased with UNQ Holdings Limited's (HKG:2177) most recent earnings report. According to our analysis of the report, the strong headline profit numbers are supported by strong earnings fundamentals.
Zooming In On UNQ Holdings' Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
UNQ Holdings has an accrual ratio of -0.25 for the year to December 2024. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. In fact, it had free cash flow of CN¥172m in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of CN¥37.9m. UNQ Holdings' free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Our Take On UNQ Holdings' Profit Performance
As we discussed above, UNQ Holdings' accrual ratio indicates strong conversion of profit to free cash flow, which is a positive for the company. Because of this, we think UNQ Holdings' underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! And one can definitely find a positive in the fact that it made a profit this year, despite losing money last year. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. For example, we've found that UNQ Holdings has 3 warning signs (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that deserve your attention before going any further with your analysis.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of UNQ Holdings' profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
