Has WS-SK Target Group Limited's (HKG:8427) Impressive Stock Performance Got Anything to Do With Its Fundamentals?
Most readers would already be aware that WS-SK Target Group's (HKG:8427) stock increased significantly by 83% over the past three months. We wonder if and what role the company's financials play in that price change as a company's long-term fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes. Specifically, we decided to study WS-SK Target Group's ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.
How Is ROE Calculated?
The formula for return on equity is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for WS-SK Target Group is:
1.3% = RM481k ÷ RM37m (Based on the trailing twelve months to May 2025).
The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. That means that for every HK$1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated HK$0.01 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
WS-SK Target Group's Earnings Growth And 1.3% ROE
As you can see, WS-SK Target Group's ROE looks pretty weak. A comparison with the industry shows that the company's ROE is pretty similar to the average industry ROE of 1.6%. Moreover, we are quite pleased to see that WS-SK Target Group's net income grew significantly at a rate of 66% over the last five years. Considering the low ROE, it is quite possible that there might also be some other aspects that are positively influencing the company's earnings growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that the growth figure reported by WS-SK Target Group compares quite favourably to the industry average, which shows a decline of 44% over the last few years.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if WS-SK Target Group is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Is WS-SK Target Group Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
WS-SK Target Group doesn't pay any regular dividends to its shareholders, meaning that the company has been reinvesting all of its profits into the business. This is likely what's driving the high earnings growth number discussed above.
Conclusion
In total, it does look like WS-SK Target Group has some positive aspects to its business. Despite its low rate of return, the fact that the company reinvests a very high portion of its profits into its business, no doubt contributed to its high earnings growth. While we won't completely dismiss the company, what we would do, is try to ascertain how risky the business is to make a more informed decision around the company.
