Stock Analysis

Strong week for ZhongAn Online P & C Insurance (HKG:6060) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of five-year loss

Statistically speaking, long term investing is a profitable endeavour. But along the way some stocks are going to perform badly. Zooming in on an example, the ZhongAn Online P & C Insurance Co., Ltd. (HKG:6060) share price dropped 56% in the last half decade. We certainly feel for shareholders who bought near the top.

On a more encouraging note the company has added HK$1.2b to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, ZhongAn Online P & C Insurance moved from a loss to profitability. Most would consider that to be a good thing, so it's counter-intuitive to see the share price declining. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.

Revenue is actually up 15% over the time period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 22% in the last year, ZhongAn Online P & C Insurance shareholders lost 11%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 9% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
