It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in United Energy Group Limited (HKG:467).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At United Energy Group

The Executive Chairman Hong Wei Zhang made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for HK$1.9b worth of shares at a price of HK$1.40 each. That implies that an insider found the current price of HK$1.45 per share to be enticing. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. If someone buys shares at well below current prices, it's a good sign on balance, but keep in mind they may no longer see value. The good news for United Energy Group share holders is that insiders were buying at near the current price. Notably Hong Wei Zhang was also the biggest seller.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid HK$3.7b for 2.63b shares. On the other hand they divested 1.29b shares, for HK$1.8b. In total, United Energy Group insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. Does United Energy Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. United Energy Group insiders own about HK$25b worth of shares (which is 66% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
