China International Capital (HKG:3908) Shareholders Booked A 72% Gain In The Last Five Years
It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the China International Capital Corporation Limited (HKG:3908) share price down 19% in the last month. On the other hand the returns over the last half decade have not been bad. It's good to see the share price is up 72% in that time, better than its market return of 66%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, China International Capital managed to grow its earnings per share at 4.0% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 11% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for China International Capital the TSR over the last 5 years was 79%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
China International Capital shareholders gained a total return of 24% during the year. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 12% over half a decade It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - China International Capital has 3 warning signs (and 1 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about.
