IDT International Limited (HKG:167) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 197% after a shaky period beforehand. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.

Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking IDT International is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 6.5x, considering almost half the companies in Hong Kong's Consumer Durables industry have P/S ratios below 0.6x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does IDT International's Recent Performance Look Like?

Recent times have been quite advantageous for IDT International as its revenue has been rising very briskly. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to outperform the wider market, which has seemingly got people interested in the stock. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as IDT International's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company's revenues underwent some rampant growth over the last 12 months. The latest three year period has also seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 9.8% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, it's not hard to understand why IDT International's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Presumably shareholders aren't keen to offload something they believe will continue to outmanoeuvre the wider industry.

The Final Word

IDT International's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

It's no surprise that IDT International can support its high P/S given the strong revenue growth its experienced over the last three-year is superior to the current industry outlook. At this stage investors feel the potential continued revenue growth in the future is great enough to warrant an inflated P/S. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
