China State Construction International Holdings Limited (HKG:3311) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 6th of July to HK$0.24. The payment will take the dividend yield to 4.8%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

China State Construction International Holdings' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, China State Construction International Holdings' earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 48.9%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 22% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was HK$0.14 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was HK$0.48. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 13% per annum over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
We Could See China State Construction International Holdings' Dividend Growing
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. China State Construction International Holdings has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 5.9% per annum. Growth in EPS bodes well for the dividend, as does the low payout ratio that the company is currently reporting.
Our Thoughts On China State Construction International Holdings' Dividend
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think China State Construction International Holdings' payments are rock solid. While China State Construction International Holdings is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We don't think China State Construction International Holdings is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
