Here's What You Should Know About CITIC Limited's (HKG:267) 6.6% Dividend Yield
Could CITIC Limited (HKG:267) be an attractive dividend share to own for the long haul? Investors are often drawn to strong companies with the idea of reinvesting the dividends. If you are hoping to live on the income from dividends, it's important to be a lot more stringent with your investments than the average punter.
A high yield and a long history of paying dividends is an appealing combination for CITIC. We'd guess that plenty of investors have purchased it for the income. That said, the recent jump in the share price will make CITIC's dividend yield look smaller, even though the company prospects could be improving. There are a few simple ways to reduce the risks of buying CITIC for its dividend, and we'll go through these below.

Payout ratios
Companies (usually) pay dividends out of their earnings. If a company is paying more than it earns, the dividend might have to be cut. As a result, we should always investigate whether a company can afford its dividend, measured as a percentage of a company's net income after tax. CITIC paid out 12% of its profit as dividends, over the trailing twelve month period. Given the low payout ratio, it is hard to envision the dividend coming under threat, barring a catastrophe.

Dividend Volatility
Before buying a stock for its income, we want to see if the dividends have been stable in the past, and if the company has a track record of maintaining its dividend. For the purpose of this article, we only scrutinise the last decade of CITIC's dividend payments. The dividend has been cut on at least one occasion historically. During the past 10-year period, the first annual payment was HK$0.4 in 2011, compared to HK$0.5 last year. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.0% a year over that time. The dividends haven't grown at precisely 2.0% every year, but this is a useful way to average out the historical rate of growth.
We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments, we don't think this is an attractive combination.
Dividend Growth Potential
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share (EPS) are growing - it's not worth taking the risk on a dividend getting cut, unless you might be rewarded with larger dividends in future. CITIC has grown its earnings per share at 5.1% per annum over the past five years. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for CITIC's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.
Conclusion
When we look at a dividend stock, we need to form a judgement on whether the dividend will grow, if the company is able to maintain it in a wide range of economic circumstances, and if the dividend payout is sustainable. Firstly, we like that CITIC has a low and conservative payout ratio. Unfortunately, earnings growth has also been mediocre, and the company has cut its dividend at least once in the past. While we're not hugely bearish on it, overall we think there are potentially better dividend stocks than CITIC out there.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. For example, we've identified 3 warning signs for CITIC (1 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing.
