Investors Met With Slowing Returns on Capital At Chinney Kin Wing Holdings (HKG:1556)
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at Chinney Kin Wing Holdings' (HKG:1556) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Chinney Kin Wing Holdings, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.16 = HK$111m ÷ (HK$1.6b - HK$896m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
So, Chinney Kin Wing Holdings has an ROCE of 16%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 6.5% generated by the Construction industry.

Historical performance is a great place to start when researching a stock so above you can see the gauge for Chinney Kin Wing Holdings' ROCE against it's prior returns. What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
While the returns on capital are good, they haven't moved much. The company has employed 48% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 16%. Since 16% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
On a side note, Chinney Kin Wing Holdings' current liabilities are still rather high at 57% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
The Bottom Line
The main thing to remember is that Chinney Kin Wing Holdings has proven its ability to continually reinvest at respectable rates of return. In light of this, the stock has only gained 31% over the last five years for shareholders who have owned the stock in this period. So because of the trends we're seeing, we'd recommend looking further into this stock to see if it has the makings of a multi-bagger.
