Foodlink A.E (ATH:FOODL) Takes On Some Risk With Its Use Of Debt

It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that Foodlink A.E. (ATH:FOODL) does use debt in its business. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. How Strong Is Foodlink A.E's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Foodlink A.E had liabilities of €32.1m due within a year, and liabilities of €15.8m falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had €2.97m in cash and €18.1m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by €26.9m.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the €17.4m company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. At the end of the day, Foodlink A.E would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment.

Our View
To be frank both Foodlink A.E's net debt to EBITDA and its track record of covering its interest expense with its EBIT make us rather uncomfortable with its debt levels. But on the bright side, its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow is a good sign, and makes us more optimistic. Looking at the bigger picture, it seems clear to us that Foodlink A.E's use of debt is creating risks for the company. If everything goes well that may pay off but the downside of this debt is a greater risk of permanent losses. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet.
