International Consolidated Airlines Group (LON:IAG) rallies 4.3% this week, taking three-year gains to 111%
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For instance the International Consolidated Airlines Group S.A. (LON:IAG) share price is 109% higher than it was three years ago. That sort of return is as solid as granite. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 48% gain in the last three months.
Since the stock has added UK£614m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
International Consolidated Airlines Group became profitable within the last three years. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

It is of course excellent to see how International Consolidated Airlines Group has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.
What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of International Consolidated Airlines Group, it has a TSR of 111% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that International Consolidated Airlines Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 97% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 5% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand International Consolidated Airlines Group better, we need to consider many other factors.
