Investors Give Fix Price Group PLC (LON:FIXP) Shares A 33% Hiding

Fix Price Group PLC (LON:FIXP) shares have had a horrible month, losing 33% after a relatively good period beforehand. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 87% share price decline.

Since its price has dipped substantially, given close to half the companies in the United Kingdom have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may consider Fix Price Group as a highly attractive investment with its 2.8x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Fix Price Group over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Fix Price Group's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Fix Price Group would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 6.5% decrease to the company's bottom line. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 43% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 6.2% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Fix Price Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Fix Price Group's P/E?

Fix Price Group's P/E looks about as weak as its stock price lately. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Fix Price Group currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

There are also other vital risk factors to consider and we've discovered 3 warning signs for Fix Price Group (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
