There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether C4X Discovery Holdings (LON:C4XD) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

How Long Is C4X Discovery Holdings' Cash Runway?

A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When C4X Discovery Holdings last reported its balance sheet in January 2022, it had zero debt and cash worth UK£12m. Importantly, its cash burn was UK£4.2m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of about 2.8 years from January 2022. Arguably, that's a prudent and sensible length of runway to have. How Is C4X Discovery Holdings' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

Although C4X Discovery Holdings had revenue of UK£5.7m in the last twelve months, its operating revenue was only UK£5.7m in that time period. We don't think that's enough operating revenue for us to understand too much from revenue growth rates, since the company is growing off a low base. So we'll focus on the cash burn, today. Even though it doesn't get us excited, the 28% reduction in cash burn year on year does suggest the company can continue operating for quite some time. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

How Easily Can C4X Discovery Holdings Raise Cash?

While C4X Discovery Holdings is showing a solid reduction in its cash burn, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

C4X Discovery Holdings' cash burn of UK£4.2m is about 8.5% of its UK£49m market capitalisation. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.

Is C4X Discovery Holdings' Cash Burn A Worry?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about C4X Discovery Holdings' cash burn. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. Its cash burn reduction wasn't quite as good, but was still rather encouraging!
