Is Now The Time To Put Future (LON:FUTR) On Your Watchlist?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Future (LON:FUTR). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Future Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Future's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Future boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from UK£0.46 to UK£0.55, in the last year. That's a 18% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Future shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 20% to 24%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

The trick, as an investor, is to find companies that are going to perform well in the future, not just in the past. To that end, right now and today, you can check our visualization of consensus analyst forecasts for future Future EPS 100% free.

Are Future Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a UK£4.3b company like Future. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth UK£264m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

Should You Add Future To Your Watchlist?

One positive for Future is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. The combination sparks joy for me, so I'd consider keeping the company on a watchlist. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 2 warning signs for Future that you should be aware of.
